About Testudo
We help companies take part in the AI economy without fear.
What we do
We insure the new liability that comes with using AI.
Testudo is a Lloyd's of London coverholder writing standalone generative AI liability insurance for US companies. A few choices shape how we work.
Underwriting led by real litigation
We price AI risk from the lawsuits companies actually face, drawing on a dataset of real AI litigation and our own AI Risk Engine, not benchmarks or guesswork.
A standalone policy, not a bolt-on
We wrote dedicated cover as its own claims-made policy, rather than an endorsement on a form built for something else, so it responds to the AI exposures older policies are starting to exclude.
We pay so you can keep building
When a covered claim hits, the policy covers the defense and the damages, up to its limits, so one lawsuit does not undo years of work.
An indication in days, not weeks
We can give an indication in days, with no access to your code, no audits, and no integrations, so getting covered never becomes an engineering project.

Where there is risk, there is insurance
In ancient Rome, soldiers locked their shields together on all sides to form a mobile shell: resilient, coordinated, and built for collective protection under pressure. Named after the Latin word for “tortoise,” they called it a testudo formation. It was designed to make progress possible even under threat. This is what our insurance does for businesses.
That same principle underpins the history of insurance.
From ancient maritime risk pools to the founding of Lloyd’s in a London coffee house, insurance has always emerged to meet the needs of its era, financing global trade, railroads, aviation, and the internet. It’s one of humanity’s oldest and most powerful ideas:
Protect yourself from a loss you are unable or unwilling to bear yourself.
Now we’re entering a new era, defined by artificial intelligence.
But for all its promise, AI creates a new kind of risk that most insurers can’t yet underwrite. Companies are putting generative AI into real work, where it talks to customers, makes recommendations, and handles sensitive data. When it causes a third-party loss, the company is held responsible, and the insurance most of them carry was never written for it.
The timing matters. As of January 2026, standard general liability policies have begun adding specific exclusions for generative AI, and some professional liability and tech E&O carriers are following. The exposure is growing while the older cover is being pulled back.
At Testudo, we’re extending that tradition. Our job is to make generative AI a risk companies can transfer and rely on, the way insurance has always made new frontiers possible.
Our conviction is simple:
If you can insure it, you can scale it.
We started Testudo in 2024 to close that gap. We built a large dataset of AI lawsuits and an AI Risk Engine that turns real legal precedent into underwriting signal, the foundation of a platform that prices and covers AI liability, fast and without breaking trust, on A+ (Superior) rated Lloyd’s of London capacity.
That work became the standalone generative AI liability policy we launched in 2026. Our mission is to build the underwriting infrastructure for the AI era.
